In kindergarten I finished a large painting and put it onto the ground to dry. One of the staff cried out ‘who did this”! I thought ‘Uh, oh! I’m in trouble.” the teacher went on to say that they were amazed that I had painted the person showing all their fingers.
As a small child I used to win art prizes at the Darwin Show. I remember one man was particularly smitten with an oil pastel sketch of a cockatoo on a branch. He said that he though the branch looked like a cigar. I wasn’t too sure how I felt about that comment but I was happy to make a sale.
At a later date I hung my artworks in our outdoor laundry area and invited the local mums around to my exhibition. More euntreprerial success!
One of my early portraits was a collage of my father sporting a long beard and my monther peaking out from behind him.
